In pursuit of a modest target of 78 runs at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, Uganda successfully achieved the desired total in the 19th over, albeit losing seven wickets along the way.

Riazat Ali Shah exhibited commendable resilience and contributed 33 runs from 56 deliveries, featuring a four.

Despite losing five wickets for a mere 26 runs, Riazat, accompanied by Juma Miyagi with 13 runs off 16 balls, formed a 35-run partnership in 43 balls for the sixth wicket, keeping Uganda's hopes alive in the contest.

Reflecting on the game, Riazat commented, "Batting on this pitch posed a challenge. When I was at the crease, we witnessed the fall of several wickets, necessitating my prolonged stay. The target did not demand aggressive boundary shots."

He further expressed, "Participating in our maiden World Cup and securing our first victory in the tournament is a monumental occasion for us. Stepping onto this grand stage brings about a remarkable sense of achievement. We extend our gratitude to our supporters back home and fans worldwide."

Riazat added, "Regardless of our team's fortunes, our loyal supporters have consistently stood by us. Despite a disheartening start to the tournament, we were well aware of our talents and aimed to showcase our capabilities to the world."

Alei Nao and Norman Vanua of Papua New Guinea were responsible for capturing two wickets each during Uganda's innings.

During the T20 World Cup 2024, Uganda won the toss and elected to field first against Papua New Guinea, a decision that ultimately paid dividends as the latter side was bowled out for a meager 77 runs in 19.1 overs.

Regrettably, only three Papua New Guinean batsmen managed to reach double figures during their dismal performance with the bat.

Uganda's Alpesh Ramjani, Cosmas Kyewuta, Juma Miyagi, and Frank Nsubuga achieved a commendable feat by each claiming two wickets.

Both teams entered this match following defeats in their previous encounters. Papua New Guinea showcased tenacity in their initial match against the hosts, West Indies, while Uganda received a comprehensive lesson from Afghanistan.
